When applying for a standard patent in Hong Kong, is shall based on the patent registration approved by appointed Overseas Patent Bureau or China's State Intellectual Property Office. HK  Intellectual Property Department establish the short-term patent and exterior design system at the same time to protect the inventions and exterior designs of all kind of products which only have short-term commercial values

Application Types 

Standard Patent

Standard patent can not be applied directly in HK, shall be divided into two phases to proceed:

First phase: Make an application to China's State Intellectual Property Office,European Patent Office or UK Patent Office. The first phase application shall be submitted to HK  Intellectual Property Department within six months after receiving Notice of Formal Examination. 

Second phase: The second phrase application shall be submitted to HK Intellectual Property Department within six months after patent authorization proclamation in China, Europe or the UK.

　　Short-term Patent

Short-term patent can be applied in HK directly, but one search report issued by one of the following report shall be submitted: 

China's State Intellectual Property Office 

European Patent Office

UK Patent Office

Each of International Searching Bureau designated by Patent Cooperation Treaty (such as the Us, Japan, Korea, Spanish and so on”

exterior design

If registering exterior designs, you can have the right to prevent others from manufacturing, importing,using,selling or renting its registered products. Registering the  exterior design can protect the shape, decoration and visual aesthetics of the new design but not protect the function and usage.

 Exerior designs of all kinds of products can apply for registration, such as computers, mobile phones, textiles, jewelry, watches and so on.
